Kindergarden Im Dörfli

Küsnacht, Schweiz

Realised 2025

Client: Gemeinde Küsnacht

The Im Dörfli kindergarten was built in 1960 by Franz Jung, son of Carl Gustav Jung. The building is located in the immediate vicinity of the Itschnach primary school complex and forms the spatial boundary of the school grounds. Typologically and volumetrically, the two-story building blends harmoniously into the village context of the hamlet. The ground floor houses a kindergarten, while the upper floor contains two apartments that were originally used as caretaker and teacher apartments.

The task was to accommodate a second kindergarten with the necessary ancillary rooms on the first floor.

The characteristic division of the building typology was to be retained. In order to create a contemporary classroom, extensive modifications to the existing supporting structure were necessary; a complete

redistribution of loads had to be carried out down to the foundations.

Parallel to the conversion, the building services were completely renovated. In the course of the pipe renovation, all sanitary facilities were rebuilt and adapted to the requirements of kindergarten operation and SIA 500. Further focus was placed on the renewal of the electrical distribution and heat generation systems. The existing oil heating system was replaced by a sustainable geothermal heat pump system. This was dimensioned in such a way that the neighbouring building will also benefit from it.
